shoot from the hip…

…or, pet level photos. Basically putting the camera at the dog’s level and you’re shooting blind. Easier said than done! But I think I finally figured out the camera settings to get a few more shots with the eyes in focus instead of the grass. (And of course I had treats to keep Mulder’s attention on the camera!) For Nikon shooters, here are my settings on my D90:

  • AF-area mode: Auto-area
  • Auto focus point set to: AF-C (continuous servo)
  • used Shutter priority, with shutter speed faster than 1/500s; and setting ISO appropriately to get there
  • and used the widest angle I had, which is 18mm on my 18-105mm Nikon lens

And now the photos, with captions. I think that makes it easier to read, don’t you? And by the way, Mulder really enjoyed posing for the camera on this afternoon! And I know he’ll continue to be happy while I keep practicing this technique. 🙂

And you’d think this would work with kids, too? I’ll let you figure that one out!

Treats attached to belt loop, toss, and.....catch

The grass is nicely in focus 😦 Most shots turns out this way, especially on the front end of the learning curve.

Good example of the distortion created by a wide angle lens, but I think it looks ok with a dog (not so much with humans). Can you see me in his left eye?

Gives new meaning to sitting up! If you follow his nose, do you see the treat?

Look into my eyes...(and ignore the awful background)

There's that pose again! When we eat popcorn, this is his famous (infamous?) begging position. Seriously, on a corgi, I think that's impressive!

Pavlov SO got it right. 🙂

Treats to drool for.

Great shots. And once again I’ll ask; does he need an agent? Remember ‘Super Dog’? I think he has returned.

Love it! Yes, treats also work very well with children, though if you were going to do that don’t use the dog treats, I’d recommend Twizzler Nibs (not all that messy like M&Ms are). 😉
And for him standing on his tiny hind legs…yes that is very impressive. Mulder, you are one kick-ass dog. Seriously.

What do you think?
